An Octagonal George I Britannia Silver Caster, John Barnard I London 1716
A superb rare George I Britannia silver caster of octagonal form, the bayonet fitted cover with scroll piercing and a 'Bun & Knop' finial.
Hallmarked John Barnard I, London 1716.
Hallmarks to the underside are clearly struck with the date letter partially over-striking the lion's head erased, Britannia and the marker's mark have good definition. Lion's head erased visible to the cover with some rubbing.
This is a superb example of the highly collectable & rare bayonet fitting octagonal casters produced in the early eighteenth century in wonderful condition.
The bayonet fitting is highly unusual in a caster of this period as this style had changed to a push fit during the end of Queen Anne's reign.
