A Superb George II Silver Salver, John Luff London 1744

A very fine silver salver of octagonal form with scrolling pattern rim and the whole resting on four scroll feet. The center engraved with the Cockburn Armorial above 'Vigilans et Audax' meaning 'Vigilant and Bold', surmounted by the Cockburn motto 'Accendit Cantu' meaning 'He rouses us with song'. (see pictures) The crest is surrounded by a beautiful floral engraved design. 

Hallmarked for London 1744 by John Luff. 


This salver is in excellent & beautiful condition
, of a very good gauge and has a wonderful colour and patina. The hallmarks are well struck and clear and the engraving is exceptionally crisp. 

 

 

The Cockburn family was an important 18th century Scottish lowlands family with many descendants now living in America.
