A Very Heavy Pair of George II Silver Pedestal Sauce Boats, London 1758, by Henry Dutton

This attractive pair of sauce boats are of large rounded form, the shaped body with curving gadrooned decoration with a gadrooned rim. Scrolling handle is decorated with an acanthus thumbpiece and applied shell decoration where it joins the rim. Both engraved under the rim with identical initials 'MM' (see pictures). All standing on a shaped, cast pedestal foot. 

Clearly hallmarked for London 1758 with the maker’s mark Henry Dutton. each sauceboat has a scratch weight underneath.

Overall these sauce boats are in good condition. Both sauce boats have some patches and bruising to the body. Marks are very clear and well struck.


This highly attractive pair of sauce boats are of exceptional weight and gauge with a lovely patina.
Note: Pedestal form sauce boats were revived from the early eighteenth century about 1760. They were usually of a heavy gauge of silver with a deeper body.

Henry Dutton's mark was entered 16th December 1754 as a large worker
