A Fine George IV Silver Fruit Basket Sheffield 1820

Magnificent George IV silver fruit basket of oval form heavily decorated with flowers, foliage and shells about a plain base at the bottom of which is an armorial depicting two sheaves of corn within a wreathed cartouche beneath a knights helmet and  winged cherubs head, at the base of which is the Latin inscription: Sola Nobilitas Virtus  which means that virtue is the only nobility.   The whole standing on an oval pedestal base  with reed decoration.  Handle with vacant Cartouche to the top with a leaf either side.

Clearly marked to the base for Sheffield at 1820 by Kirkby Waterhouse and Co.

This is a wonderful heavy robust basket of superb workmanship and in excellent original condition with no signs of damage or repair. The inscription and armorial  to the bottom are still clear and the hallmarks to the underside clear and completely legible.  All the decoration is still crisp and the definition of all parts is  virtually as when it was made. The hinge to the handle is good and the piece sits flat upon the surface of a table .  Good colour and patina.
