A very rare William III britannia silver lighthouse caster, London 1698 by Joseph Ward

£4,000

A very rare William III britannia silver lighthouse caster, London 1698. Britannia Standard, with a turned finial to the domed, pierced cover engraved with scrolls and flowers with bayonet fixing mounts. The main body of the caster is plain with applied bands to the rim and waist. All standing on a lobed foot.

Hallmarked for London 1698 by Joseph Ward. Maker's mark to the body and lid.

Joseph Ward entered his mark in 1697 and was a very colourful character judging by the short biography I have found on him. Of excellent gauge, well proportioned design and a beautiful lid with pierced design surmounted with a lovely final. The overall patina is very nice. It sits true and apart from a little rubbing to the hallmarks, is in excellent condition with no repairs.

This beautiful caster is in exceptionally fine condition, one of the most outstanding examples we have ever handled.

This is a lovely caster of museum quality.
