An Exceptional Large Victorian Silver Tea or Drinks Tray Sheffield 1896, by Martin, Hall & Co.

A superb quality twin-handled silver tea or drinks tray of octagonal form. The  cast and applied pierced border with undulating rim and floral decoration. The central plate with an intricately engraved border of flowers and foliage surrounding a contemporary crest depicting a man holding an arrow and a crescent moon above an oval cartouche within which are the same symbols on a matted ground.  Above is a knight in armour in a garland. Underneath is an inscription dated August 3rd 1896. The two cast handles of richly detailed fruit and foliage  supported by two bacchus masks to the underside. The whole standing on four bun feet.                                                                         

Clearly hallmarked to the underside for Sheffield 1896, with the markers mark RM EH for Martin, Hall & Co. The border is marked to the underside with the lion passant and each of the feet is also marked with the lion passant.

This is a spectacularly fine tray with no damage or repair. Wonderful workmanship and in absolutely first class original condition. Very good colour and patina.
